EE launches next gen in-car wifi solution
EE brings in-car wifi to drivers and passengers

EE, the UK joint venture between T-Mobile and Orange, has announced the launch of its connected car solution based on 4G technology. Buzzard 2 is a device which EE claims will bring high-speed connectivity to enable in-car entertainment and navigation, without having an in-built solution.

The Buzzard 2 plugs directly into the car’s 12 volt dashboard socket, and provides wifi based on 4G and 3G connectivity. The device, which is essentially a dongle for the car, caters for up to 10 devices and is available on a variety of pay monthly and pay as you go tariffs with EE.

Christopher Traggio, Director of PAYG and Connected Products at EE, believes the device is born out of increasing consumer demand for ubiquitous coverage. Rural areas of limited connectivity, or “not-spots”, are prevalent throughout the country, and solutions like Buzzard 2 can help bring continuous connectivity to long journeys.

“High-speed internet connectivity has become second nature for many families – both inside the home and on the move – so it can come as shock on car journeys when the children can’t access their favourite games or TV to entertain themselves,” he said. “Buzzard 2 creates a powerful 4G WiFi connection without battery drain – providing a great solution for passengers young and old, so they can check their newsfeeds, stream music, play online games or catch-up on TV in the car.”

EE’s offering is the latest in the emerging field of in-car connectivity. Last month, Deutsche Telekom and China Mobile announced a strategic partnership and joint venture to deliver 4G-based M2M connectivity and information services to drivers. At the time, Reinhard Clemens, Deutsche Telekom Board Member said: “Connected car is a strategic initiative within Deutsche Telekom Group, while China is of strategic importance for our connected car business.”
