Sony Ericsson brings out yet more devices
June 15, 2007
Although it launched four new devices only a month ago, Japanese Swedish joint venture Sony Ericsson refreshed its portfolio again on Friday with six new devices.
The vendor introduced the Z320 and Z250 low end devices; the K530 stainless steel WCDMA phone, which comes bundled with the HGE100 wired headset that includes a GPS receiver; as well as the K850, which builds on the success of the K800/810 and refreshes the range with a larger screen and a mid-range digital camera as well as an SD memory card slot.
At the higher end is the W910 which packs 1GB of on-board memory and uses HSDPA for high speed 3G. It has dedicated gaming buttons and is one of several devices on the Sony Ericsson roadmap to incorporate an accelerometer, the latest must have feature of the gaming console world, used to help control the action in some of the games.
Finally, the W960 has double the on-board memory of its older sibling, the W950, an improved keypad, a better camera, wifi and loudspeakers.
In an interesting move, Martin Garner, director of Wireless Intelligence at Ovum, notes that the company has also announced a bunch of interesting applications to go with its new portfolio.
Japanese parent Sony has deployed its Media Bar UI developed for the PSP, to manage the camera functions in the K850 and media in the Walkman devices.
An upgrade of TrackID sees an overhauled search to enable searching by snippets of lyrics, while an upgrade to PlayNow extends the preview functionality to all forms of media. There is also a feature called SenseMe, which uses meta data from the music to plot the songs as dots on a mood graph of Happy-Sad vs. Fast-Slow.
Meanwhile, a new Walkman player works with the accelerometer to switch between landscape and portrait modes, plus control the music with gestures.
