Ericsson claims to have developed a solution that triples uplink capacity in HSPA networks, allowing operators with a large number of users to offer high uplink data speeds. The news comes hot on the heels of an announcement from Nokia-Siemens Networks, which has claimed it has developed a new solution to double throughput and data speeds for users at the edge of a small cell.
We speak to Jukka Luoma, head of product management, voice and IP transformation, Nokia Siemens Networks, following the announcement that the company won the Best LTE Core Network Product category at the LTE North America Awards 2011, held last week in Dallas, Texas, USA.
Indian operator Bharti Airtel will rely on Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) to expand, plan and operate its mobile networks in seven African countries. The operator, which provides services in 19 countries across Asia and Africa, will rely on NSN to expand its 2G (GSM/EDGE) networks and deploy 3G networks in the countries.

The number of GSM subscriptions supporting M2M applications is expected to top one billion by 2015, according to equipment vendor Nokia Siemens Networks this week. To meet this demand, NSN has introduced a software suite catering to the use of GSM networks as M2M service platforms.
Nokia Siemens Networks’ search for a willing buyer for a stake in the ailing JV appears to have staggered to a halt, with reports emerging that Nokia and Siemens have agreed to rather invest more of their own cash in an effort to revive the partnership’s fortunes. Reports in the Wall Street Journal suggest that plans to sell a controlling stake in the venture to a consortium including private equity investors were about to fall through, with Reuters quoting telecoms analyst Earl Lum as saying that “Any potential investor would need to see some light at the end of the tunnel with regard to profitability for NSN.”
Over the weekend Nokia Siemens Networks finally closed its $975m purchase of Motorola’s network infrastructure assets. The move follows China’s approval of the deal and will see NSN take on responsibility for 50 operator customers in 52 countries, as well as 6900 ex-Motorola employees.
