Category ten of the LTE Awards 2013 is for the Most Innovative LTE Application/Service.

For this award entrants are required to describe the traffic management product and how it contributes to making LTE more attractive for operators to deploy and has contributed to the success of a commercial LTE deployment.

Category seven of the LTE Award 2013 is the Best LTE RAN Product. This award recognises Radio Access Network elements that are exceptional in their area. Entrants are required to describe the RAN product and how it contributes to making LTE more attractive for operators to deploy/improve the quality or coverage of commercial LTE networks.

Category six of the LTE Awards 2013 is the Best LTE Core Network Element, which recognises the core network elements that are exceptional in their area. Entrants are required to describe their core network product and how it contributes to making LTE more attractive for operators to deploy, and how it has contributed to the success of a commercial LTE deployment.

Category five of the LTE Awards 2013 is the Most Successful LTE Launch, which is judged on the success of a launch and how it stands out from the other launches. This category is open to both operators and vendors who have been involved in the launch of a commercial LTE network since last year’s LTE World Summit.

Category four of the The Telecoms.com LTE Awards 2013 is the Most Significant Development of a Commercial LTE network, which is judged on the progress and developments being made by an operator’s commercially available LTE network.

When TeliaSonera launched the first commercial LTE network in Sweden in December 2009, the technology was avant-garde. By early 2013 however, it had become state-of-the-art. At the beginning of May 2013, the GSA reported that there were 175 commercial LTE networks deployed globally across 70 countries – with 100 of those launched in the past year, and the industry is set to grow further in the next 12 months.

The amount of traffic generated in the US by BitTorrent, the file sharing internet protocol , has dropped significantly, according to a report from policy control company Sandvine.

Over the past six months BitTorrent accounted for 9.2 per cent of peak-period traffic, down from 11.3 per cent in 2012 and 17.2 per cent in 2011, the report said. Sandvine attributes the drop in the usage of the file sharing protocol to the increasing availability of subscriber-based, paid-for, on-demand content from applications such as Netflix. Indeed, online video service Netflix maintained a 29 per cent peak-period traffic share in the US, ahead of YouTube, which climbs to 15.4 per cent compared to 13.8 per cent in 2012.

Michele Zarri, head of international standardisation and IP management, Deutsche Telekom, UK, is speaking on VoLTE vs OTT Voice on Day Two of the LTE World Summit, taking place on the 24th-26th June 2013, at the Amsterdam RAI, Netherlands.
