Fujitsu to launch European smartphone play

Japanese electronics vendor Fujitsu has announced its intention to launch smartphones and tablets into the European market just as mobile operators are looking to reduce the number of device vendors they work with. Fujitsu has a 20 per cent share of the Japanese mobile device market, according to Robert Pryke, director of Fujitsu’s European device business.

Femto Forum rebrands to Small Cell Forum as Ericsson joins board

The Femto Forum has announced that is has changed its name to the Small Cell Forum, as it look to bring all outdoor small cell technologies under its umbrella. Small Cell Forum chair Simon Saunders told Telecoms.com that the new name would better reflect its work, which embraces residential, enterprise, metro and rural small cells in addition to indoor Femtocells and that the expanded outlook beyond residential devices had encouraged telecoms vendor Ericsson to join the board.

Gartner: smartphone sales up 58 per cent in 2011

Gartner has published its mobile device numbers for the final quarter of 2011, reporting that 1.8 billion units were sold to end users across the year, up 11.1 per cent on 2010. Smartphones accounted for 31 per cent of all device sales with 472 million units sold, up 58 per cent year on year.

EC gives green light to Google’s Motorola takeover

The European Commission (EC) has given the go-ahead to Google’s proposed acquisition of Motorola Mobility. It said that the deal “would not significantly modify the market situation in respect of operating systems and patents for these devices.”
