Verizon expands IaaS worldwide
Verizon Global Wholesale is expanding its Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) beyond US, Europe and Asia Pacific to wholesale customers globally.
There was no great surprise to Tuesday’s announcement that US CDMA operator Verizon Wireless has finally managed to secure a CDMA version of the Apple iPhone 4. The news is a boon for the Verizon network, which is widely perceived as offering the best quality in the country. iPhone pioneer AT&T meanwhile, could lose subscribers to its closest rival.
Internet telephony player Skype has agreed to acquire Qik, a US-based mobile video sharing platform, which will give the VoIP firm greater capabilities in the mobile telephony market.

US carrier Verizon has formed an alliance with Gateway Business Africa that will expand Verizon Business Private IP network capabilities in several African countries.The agreement allows Verizon Business to leverage Gateway’s network presence and extend coverage of the Verizon MPLS network to an additional 14 pan-African countries by using interconnection points between the companies’ networks.
Verizon has launched its Machine to Machine Management Center, giving enterprise customers near real-time access to monitor M2M wireless devices. Customers can access the platform directly through Verizon’s MyBusiness or the Verizon Enterprise Center, or through customers’ business-specific applications, developed using nPhase’s unified web services SDK. The solution is a product of nPhase – the joint venture between Qualcomm and Verizon Wireless.
US carrier Verizon has unveiled plans to launch commercial LTE services in 38 major metropolitan areas, providing coverage for around 110 million Americans by the end of the year. The 4G technology will also be deployed in 60 or so airports nationwide by other key cities.
US vendor Qualcomm has given the strongest indication yet that it is set to call time on its Flo TV mobile TV service. The firm has announced that it is to suspend direct to consumer sales of service and devices immediately, and has committed to maintaining service for existing D2C customers only until spring 2011. The firm said that it would offer refunds to users “in the event of a discontinuance of service”, suggesting that this is the probable outcome, and conceded that it was expecting to have to make “some layoffs”.
US telco Verizon Wireless on Wednesday made a total of 20 different APIs (application programming interfaces) available to developers, opening up its network to new messaging and location-based services.
US carrier AT&T has revealed more of its plans to deploy LTE technology in the US, ahead of a proposed launch in the summer of 2011.
US carrier Verizon Wireless is to introduce its first tablet, the Android-based Samsung Galaxy Tab, equipped with a 7-inch touch screen and a 1GHz Cortex A8 Hummingbird Application processor.
