Neotel becomes Tata Communications subsidiary

South Africa's Neotel has become a subsidiary of Tata Communications

India’s Tata Communications has upped its stake in South Africa’s second national operator Neotel, making the telco a subsidiary of the company. Tata’s stake has increased from 56 per cent to 61.5 per cent. It is not clear which of Neotel’s other shareholders has sold its stake; the Neotel website lists Communitel and Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) partner Nexus Connexion as the other shareholders.

West African Cable System to land next week

WACS is due to reach its final destination in South Africa next week

The construction phase of the West African Cable System (WACS) is due for completion early in April, when the cable will reach its final destination point at Yzerfontein in South Africa. The cable was slated to be ready for commercial use by the third quarter of this year, but that target has now been pushed back to early 2012.
