Smartbooks, or multifunctional portable devices – especially those in tablet form – will enjoy explosive sales over the next four years and will represent more than 50 per cent of all embedded device sales by 2014.
Hardware manufacturer HP has been making waves at CES, taking place in Las Vegas this week, with the unveiling of an Android-based smartbook and a Windows 7-based slate device.

It seems that every vendor is getting on the netbook bandwagon-and if they’re not, they’re trying to get their own bandwagon rolling with a raft of similar form factor devices. Consumers love netbooks as a cheap, internet-enabled PC substitute and carriers seem happy to subsidise them in order to drive mobile broadband subscriptions.

US software firm Sun Microsystems has been making its presence felt in the mobile space of late, most recently announcing the porting of its Java platform to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon ARM-based processor.
As the explosive growth in mobile broadband has been partially stimulated by the burgeoning netbook or ultra mobile PC market, vendors are falling over themselves to find the next niche and lucrative mobile gadget.
