Verizon launches 4G LTE MiFi 4510L device
Verizon has released the 4G LTE MiFi 4510L a, a mobile hotspot device that will enable up to five devices to connect to it via wifi and gain access to Verizon’s LTE network.
LG to develop own smartphone chips
Embattled South Korean OEM LG has announced that it’s working on developing its own smartphone chips in a bid to boost its flagging handset business. Although LG is the world’s third-largest mobile phone manufacturer, the company has reported losses for three quarters in a row and is under increasing pressure from rivals HTC and Samsung.
Qualcomm expands portfolio with $3bn Atheros purchase
US chip giant Qualcomm on Wednesday agreed to snap up Atheros Communications, a wired and wireless networking technology vendor, for a total of $3.1bn in cash.
Qualcomm confirms Flo TV switch-off and sells spectrum to AT&T
Californian technology firm Qualcomm has announced that it is to wind down its mobile TV service, Flo TV, and sell the spectrum in which the service operated to US carrier AT&T fro $1.925bn. It has been expected for some time that Flo TV would be shut down because of weak sales. However, Qualcomm had suggested that it might reposition its mobile TV broadcast network as a supplemental offering for US operators for the transmission of mobile data. The sale of the spectrum to AT&T indicates that this alternative was not viable for Qualcomm.
Strong support for mhealth initiatives
The mHealth Alliance this week won further investment from new and founding partners including HP, the Rockefeller Foundation and the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad). The three organisations all agreed a $1m grant each, to help improve health care and health systems around the globe using mobile technology.

Qualcomm hints strongly at Flo TV switch-off
US vendor Qualcomm has given the strongest indication yet that it is set to call time on its Flo TV mobile TV service. The firm has announced that it is to suspend direct to consumer sales of service and devices immediately, and has committed to maintaining service for existing D2C customers only until spring 2011. The firm said that it would offer refunds to users “in the event of a discontinuance of service”, suggesting that this is the probable outcome, and conceded that it was expecting to have to make “some layoffs”.
