Alcatel-Lucent has announced the arrival of its virtualized service router (VSR), a virtualised network function capable of being deployed in an NFV environment. The vendor claims that the VSR software is capable of being deployed on general purpose x86 compute platforms, a form of commoditised off the shelf hardware (COTS).
Payment models have changed dramatically, leading to reduced margins for mobile operators. Unless traditional telcos look to reap back these revenues from additional streams, the environment will become even more challenging.
