China Telecom has awarded a contract to Alcatel-Lucent to further boost its broadband capacity and service capabilities, as work moves up a gear to meet the Chinese government’s ‘Broadband China’ target of delivering high-speed broadband connections to over 250mn households across the country by 2015.
Orange has revealed plans to invest around €300mn over the next four years in a fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) network which will deliver speeds of up to 100 Mbps to around 1.5mn homes and businesses in the country’s biggest cities, with the first connections to be switched on before the end of this year.
The fibre broadband market will be dominated by China over the next five years, according to a report from analyst house Ovum. China’s dominance will stem from strong growth in subscriber numbers and from domestic vendor’s healthy exports.
Santa Rosa, US-based internet service provider, Sonic.net, is looking to disrupt the traditionally expensive local market by offering a 1Gbps fibre-to-the-home connection for just $69.99 per month.
