euNetworks, a fibre-optic infrastructure provider has announced a network supply deal with Vodafone Germany. As part of the agreement, euNetworks will deliver fibre services to the operator in Frankfurt, Hamburg, Berlin and Munich. The deal will enable Vodafone Germany to enhance its backhaul for its LTE network, which it is continuing to roll-out since in launch in December 2010 and now reaches more than four million homes. euNetworks owns 13 fibre-based metropolitan networks across Europe and according to a statement the deal will, “enable Vodafone to benefit from euNetworks extended footprint”.
UK incumbent BT is facing growing competition in the fibre broadband market from fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) vendor Hyperoptic. The FTTH specialist focuses on delivering fibre broadband directly to consumer premises in newly built homes.
BT Vision, the digital TV based subscription service offered by UK incumbent BT, has purchased the rights to show Premier League football matches in the UK in a bumper deal that combined with BSkyB is worth £3.018 billion (US$ 4.68bn). The bold move, which enables BT to show 38 live games from the 2013-14 season saw it beat out competition from traditional pay-TV broadcast companies such as ESPN and is being viewed as a statement of intent from the UK telecoms company.
Virgin Media, the UK cable broadband operator, announced that it has completed a successful trial delivering speeds of 1.5Gpbs over its existing cable infrastructure. The trial was conducted on a single road in London called Old Street, part of an area that has been dubbed the ‘Silicon Roundabout’ by members of the local tech community known as the ‘TechHub’.
Startup ISP Hyperoptic has announced that it will be launching a 1Gbps fibre optic service in the UK in September. The service is a full fibre-to-the-premises offering and will offer symmetrical 1Gbps speeds for download and upload.
Virgin Media, the UK’s predominantly cable-based broadband network operator, said that its 100Mbps fibre optic service is now available to four million homes in the country.
The company said that service is now available to 100 towns in the UK, and plans to make the service available to its entire network, with a reach of 13 million people, by mid-2012. Virgin Media charges £35 a month for the service when taken with a Virgin phone line, and £45 a month as a stand-alone product.
