Amid concerns that India’ auction of 3G spectrum may be delayed yet again, the WiMAX Forum has said that every six months of delay in the process results in $1bn in lost revenues for the country.
Nortel, the fading star of the telecoms world, said late Wednesday it is planning to sell off its GSM and GSM-R (GSM for railways) assets via an open auction process.
Analysts have reason to believe that the long awaited Indian 3G spectrum auction may take place sooner rather than later, although its expected impact on competition and technology is thought to be vastly overstated.
Swedish equipment vendor Ericsson emerged as the highest bidder for Nortel’s LTE and CDMA assets in a 12 hour auction which took place on Friday.

Denmark this week got the auction process for its 2.5GHz spectrum underway, with the National IT and Telecom Agency (NITA) announcing a public consultation on the auction.

The official award of 3G wireless spectrum in India may now be delayed until the end of 2009, and possibly even later, industry watchers warned on Tuesday.
