BT pitches broadband anywhere smartphone deal
08 May 2008
Just in case anyone forgot that UK incumbent BT was still in the mobile game, the operator has released its first 'mobile broadband' offering, in the shape of a HTC smartphone.
Customers can purchase the Windows Mobile-based HTC s620, now known as the BT ToGo, on top of BT Total Broadband Option 3, which delivers up to 8Mbps fixed line broadband and a wireless router.
The basic Broadband Anywhere package costs an extra £5 per month for 50 minutes ad 50 texts, while the premium package is £35 extra with 600 minutes and 700 texts. All the bundles include unlimited wifi browsing but only a paltry 10MB per month of GPRS data downloads.
It seems bonkers that this is what BT is pitching as an 'internet capable', 'broadband anywhere' deal. Why no 3G for a start? The HTC device may pack a full QWERTY keyboard and a big screen, but it's fastest cellular connection is over EDGE, which isn't something Vodafone, who supplies BT's wireless network, could be called enthusiastic about.
Granted, BT does have an extensive wifi network, but that's still not really broadband 'anywhere'.
