Qwest drops Sprint, takes 816,000 subs

Embattled US carrier Sprint was struck yet another blow on Tuesday as Qwest, a regional operator for which Sprint supplied wireless services, decided to take its business elsewhere.

Qwest said it has struck a five year deal with Verizon Wireless to market and sell the complete line of Verizon services to its consumer, business and government customers.

The move will see Qwest take its existing 816,000 strong customer base away with it.

The news comes at a time when Sprint is dogged by rumours. Having spun off its WiMAX business into a joint venture with Clearwire, Google, Intel and a couple of cable companies, there is also speculation that the operator might be looking to offload Nextel as a public safety network. In the background there are also reports that T-Mobile USA is sniffing around to pick up Sprint, or whatever is left of it.
