UK runs out of iPhones

The European price cuts on the 8GB version of the Apple iPhone seem to have had a knock on effect, with UK retailer the Carphone Warehouse reporting on Wednesday that it has sold out of both the 8GB and its more expensive 16GB brother.

UK carrier O2 knocked £100 off the price of the 8GB earlier this month, bringing it down to a more accessible £169. However, it seems to have stirred up so much demand that the £329 16GB version has also sold out.

The news comes just as more tongues were set wagging on the subject of a 3G iPhone, with rumours emerging that US operator AT&T will be subsiding the next generation device to the tune of $200, taking it down to a more affordable $299. The operator is expected to begin shipping the next version of the Apple handset after June.

News of a more solid sort came from Ted Rogers, president and CEO of Canadian operator Rogers Communications, who on Tuesday revealed that the company has struck a deal with Apple to bring the iPhone to Canada later this year. However, the suggestion that the device will arrive 'later' has already led some to believe that this too will be a 3G unit.
