Intel warms up Atomic internet platform
04 April 2008
US chip shop and WiMAX heavy hitter Intel this week introduced a new technology package, with a view to boosting the nascent Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs) market.
Launched at Intel's developer forum in Shanghai this week, the platform comprises the Intel Atom processor (formerly codenamed "Silverthorne") on a single chip with integrated graphics called the Intel System Controller Hub.
Intel claims the Atom is the world's fastest processor under 3 watts.
The US firm claims that Atom and the System Controller Hub will enable PC-like capabilities, "an uncompromised internet experience" and long battery life in smaller mobile devices.
"Today is a historic day for Intel and the high-tech industry as we deliver our first-ever Intel Atom processor and surround it with a great package of technology," said Anand Chandrasekher, Intel senior vice president and general manager of the Ultra Mobility Group.
Tier One manufacturers, including Nokia and Samsung, are already planning to ship Intel-based MIDs beginning this summer. Mobile WiMAX-enabled, these devices will offer average download speeds of 2-4Mbps with a maximum throughput of 10Mbps.
Intel expects to launch a second-generation Atom chip in late 2009, which will be aimed at smartphones.
The word's largest chipmaker estimates that the market for MIDs, low-cost PCs, Internet-enabled consumer electronics and embedded devices, such as in-car systems, will be worth $40bn by 2011.
Intel says it has spent 20 per cent of its R&D budget this year on expanding into new markets with Atom, as well as graphics and WiMAX wireless chips.
