LiMo wheels Release 1 out of garage
01 April 2008
Open mobile Linux movement, the LiMo Foundation, lifted the curtain on its mobile platform this week.
A not for profit organisation, the LiMo Foundation aims to blend the community-based development benefits of Linux with development practices from the mobile community in a bid to minimise fragmentation - an ambition shared by Android backers the Open Handset Alliance and as well as the LiPS Forum among other Linux collectives.
LiMo Platform Release 1 calls itself a modular, plug-in, hardware-independent architecture built around an open operating system, with a secure run-time environment for support of downloaded applications.
The group said that all of the enabling technology within Release 1 has now been commercially deployed and is already proven within multiple handsets in the market today.
"With Release 1 of the LiMo Platform now completed, LiMo Foundation has established a scalable and sustainable mobile device platform that will spur rapid innovation and contributions from all LiMo members," said Morgan Gillis, executive director of LiMo Foundation.
Gillis said Release 2 of the LiMo Platform is now being specified and developed within a collaborative process involving a range of LiMo members and is planned to be completed by year end.
