NextWave unveils mobile TV for WiMAX

Wireless broadband player turned kit maker NextWave Wireless took the wraps off a mobile TV platform for WiMAX technology on Monday.

The company has put last year's acquisition of UMTS-TDD kit supplier IPWireless to good use, basing the MXtv offering on IPWireless' own TDtv platform.

MXtv is a mobile multicast and broadcast technology that enables WiMAX operators to deliver rich and personalised multimedia services including mobile TV, interactive media, and digital audio. NextWave said that macro-diversity technology is used to improve the broadcast performance over the WiMAX channel.

The offering promises 30fps QVGA and WQVGA content and up to 45 high quality mobile TV channels in 10MHz with channel switching times of under two seconds. Network operators can also dynamically allocate spectrum based on content availability, time of day requirements, user demand, and the availability of live events such as sports, concerts, interactive reality shows or emergency broadcasts.

Allen Salmasi, CEO of NextWave, said: "MXtv enables WiMAX operators to profitably deliver exciting mobile multimedia services such as mobile TV, digital radio, and other types of cutting-edge multicast services including user-generated, shared video content. In addition, MXtv will provide WiMAX operators a unique opportunity to generate significant incremental revenue by delivering relevant and highly-targeted interactive advertising to customers while maintaining control over the nature and extent of content delivered over their network."

Godfrey Chua, research manager for Wireless and Mobile Infrastructure at industry analyst IDC, said: "NextWave's MXtv service offers an attractive value proposition for service providers interested in deploying WiMAX.

"This is because MXtv enables effective video delivery over the technology, thus creating the potential to turn WiMAX into a multi-media and advertising platform that could significantly improve the WiMAX business case for operators."

In a separate announcement, NextWave and Chinese vendor Huawei announced a joint development agreement under which Huawei will integrated the MXtv technology in its own WiMAX networking kit.
