Subsea cable repairs underway
06 February 2008
Work has started to repair the subsea communications cables linking the Middle East and Asia to Europe.
Flag Telecom, owner of two of the damaged cables said that the pipes were expected to be fully operational within a week.
Ships have been sent out to locations where the cables have been cut, between Egypt and Italy and Dubai and Oman. Repairs are already underway.
A consortium of 16 international telecom companies are also understood to be repairing a third cable, damaged around the same time. The SEA-ME-WE 4 cable links South East Asia to Europe and damage to this connection is thought to be responsible for recent internet outages in India.
