Subsea cable trouble hits Asia, Middle East

Perhaps the Immense Menacing Squid (IMS) has been at it again, but internet services across the Middle East and India are suffering severe disruption due to damage to subsea cables linking the regions to Europe.

India's infrastructure is operating at about 30 per cent capacity, while Egypt is thought to be operating at about 40 per cent. Qatar, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are also understood to be suffering disruption.

Interoute, the owner of European voice and data networks encompassing over 54,000Kms of lit fibre, said that European business can't turn a blind eye to the interruption, considering the vast amount of outsourced call centres and IT departments in those regions.

The company said it has re-established business critical links for many of India and the Middle East's leading businesses.

Some reports suggest it could be a week before the damage is completely rectified and all undersea cables are operating at full capability.
