Sprint, Clearwire getting back together?
30 January 2008
Shares in both Sprint and Clearwire received a boost on Tuesday as rumours of a WiMAX reconciliation began to circulate on the web.
Sprint and Clearwire called off their partnership to jointly deploy a nationwide WiMAX network in November, without giving a reason.
It's no secret that the departure of Sprint Nextel's chief executive and chairman, Gary Forsee, and the carrier's constant struggle to keep up with its rivals in terms of subscriber growth, have put pressure on the company's expansion into a new technology deployment.
But since the break up, both companies have maintained that they are continuing their discussions regarding how best to collaborate for the deployment of a nationwide mobile WiMAX network.
The latest word on the web is that Sprint and Clearwire are discussing a joint venture funded by Intel, one of the biggest backers of WiMAX. It is also believed that the companies have approached Google with a potential investment opportunity as well.
