MontaVista takes seat in LiMo
Mobile Linux movement, the LiMo Foundation, won yet more support on Thursday as OS developer MontaVista joined the group.
A handful of telecom powerhouses banded together in January to form the mobile Linux collective. Mitsubishi, Motorola, NEC, NTT DoCoMo, Panasonic Mobile, Samsung and Vodafone were the founding members.
A not for profit organisation, the foundation is aimed at blending the community-based development benefits of Linux with development practices from the mobile community in a bid to minimise fragmentation.
MontaVista's Mobilinux platform brings an embedded Linux operating system optimised for mobile devices to the table. The company already has strong ties with the likes of Motorola, DoCoMo and PalmSource.
Handsets supporting the LiMo platform are expected to reach consumers in the first half of 2008.
Earlier this week, the Linux Phone Standards (LiPS) Forum and the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) got together to work on the standardisation of next generation mobile services.
The collaboration should pave the way for more interoperability between mobile Linux platforms.
LiPS develops specifications and standards for services and user applications on mobile Linux platforms and OMA develops open specifications for service interoperability independent of the software platform.
