AT&T signs up for WiMAX in Alaska

US-based operator AT&T has given yet more credence to WiMAX as a commercial reality with the announcement of plans to deploy the technology in Alaska.

AT&T Alascom said Tuesday that it has tapped kit vendor Alvarion to supply its BreezeMAX mobile WiMAX platform for a commercial deployment in the 2.3GHz TDD spectrum after completing a technical and business evaluation process.

The deployment is already underway and Alascom announced the availability of wireless broadband in select areas of Juneau. The company plans to announce deployment in additional Alaska communities in 2008.

The operator said it is using a combination of Alvarion's nomadic self install Si CPEs (customer premise equipment), with the outdoor Pro model for maximizing cell radius in the mountainous and wooded areas common to Alaska. SIM-card enabled, the Si is available with a wide variety of options, from multiple POTS interfaces to built in wifi.
