Napster goes mobile in European first
12 December 2006
The peer-to-peer application, Napster, is to be offered on mobiles Tuesday, in what is believed to be the first launch of its type in Europe.
O2 Ireland is claiming the first with the launch of Napster Mobile on its i-Mode handsets. The company said that non-i-Mode customers will get the service by March of next year on O2 Active.
The entire service will be hosted and managed by Ericsson under a managed services agreement.
Napster on the mobile is a significant leap for the company which, just a few years ago, was branded a bandwidth hogging curse that spread piracy across the internet. Its 18-year-old founder, college dropout Shaun Fanning, caused an online revolution in how music is shared electronically.
Napster Mobile will allow O2 Ireland customers to search, browse, preview and purchase content from Napster's music catalogue of over two million songs.
