Helio lands in US
02 May 2006
Helio, the virtual mobile operator joint venture between Earthlink and SK Telecom, goes live in the US today, targeting the affluent youth and MySpace addicts.
Two unique handsets, the Kickflip and Hero, will go on sale for $250 (£136) and $275 respectively on the company's website from today, while a monthly service fee will cost between $85 and $135.
While the monthly service tariff is almost double that of rival operators, Helio makes a point of saying that its charges also included data usage and picture messaging, positioning the offering more at heavy data users.
Helio is understood to be targeting trust fund kids, gadget freaks and those addicted to the popular community site, MySpace. Through a partnership with the web portal, MySpace users will be able to read and post direct to the site from their Helio devices.
The company is targeting 3 million subscribers by 2010.
