EU slaps wrists over telecoms rules
05 April 2006
The European Commission is this week reported to have sent formal warnings to over a dozen countries for breach of EU telecoms rules.
Eleven countries have been warned over failure to implement emergency telephone lines. Greece, Ireland, Italy, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Hungary, the Netherlands, Portugal and Slovakia have been identified as the offenders.
Meanwhile, Belgium and Poland received warnings for failing to conduct adequate reviews of the communications markets to ascertain whether these markets are effectively competitive.
Slovenia is also being monitored for failing to fully implement number portability processes, which allow consumers to retain their number when changing operators.
