Smartphones targeted by hackers
04 April 2006
Cyber-criminals are using increasingly sophisticated methods to target mobile devices, but smartphone adoption needs to reach a critical mass before criminals actively go after them for financial gain, according to a report today by Kaspersky lab.
Cybercriminals target smartphones because of their perceived lack of security and it is expected to increase dramatically as soon as smartphone penetration reaches critical mass.
Worryingly, for corporates planning to mobilise their workforce, there has been a marked shift away from individuals being targeted with malicious attacks and a trend towards attacks against government organisations, according to Kaspersky Lab.
The report, compiled by Yury Mashevsky, a Kaspersky Lab virus analyst, examines the evolution of the criminal underground and provides an overview of the criminalisation of the internet during 2005.
It concludes by stating: "2005 shows that cyber-criminals are likely to continue to focus on mobile devices and the financial sector. However, rootkits, botnets, cyber blackmail and other criminal activities are likely to remain widespread."
