BT not looking to buy or merge
27 March 2006
The Chief Executive of BT Group, Ben Verwaayen, is not, despite reports, interested in buying or merging with Europe's traditional telecoms operators, he was quoted as saying in an interview published today.
Verwaayen said in the interview with Finnish business daily Kauppalehti that he believed such mergers were unnecessary.
"Personally, I do not support the merging of telecoms firms across Europe's borders," the paper quoted him as saying.
Verwaayen said there were no limits to what operators could do if they just understood their customers and their needs.
"Traditional telecoms operators should do a lot of work to improve their services," he said in the interview.
Asked about reports of a possible private equity bid for the British operator, Verwaayen said BT was keeping its eye firmly on running its business.
"Rumours are rumours and work according to their own logic. Our operations are guided by another logic that is connected to the sector," he said in the interview.
