German incumbent carrier, Deutsche Telekom, today announced that it has partnered with Microsoft to Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) services to customers in Germany.

The VDSL network is expected to permit bandwidth of up to 50 Mbps and is planned for launch in mid-2006 in ten major German cities including Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne and Munich.

The agreement is Microsoft's largest IPTV-contract in Europe to date and its second largest worldwide.

The rollout will enable customers in Germany to receive regular TV programmes as well as high definition programs, interactive TV, digital video recording and video on demand as well as applications such as voting, sports scores and league tables and competitions.

Kai-Uwe Ricke, chairman of the board of management at Deutsche Telekom said: "IPTV delivered via VDSL will enable better, more service oriented, more interactive and, above all, more customized television."
