Bluetooth will grow into mobile's bestest friend

The Bluetooth market will experience a 71 per cent hike in shipments to 500 million in 2006, according to market research firm ABI Research.

The report: Bluetooth: The Global Outlook, suggests the Bluetooth market will grow at a compound annual rate of over 40 per cent between 2004 and 2011. By 2009, says the report, shipments of equipment will break the 1 billion mark.

Telecommunications gadgets will likely play a significant role in the growth of the wireless technology but ABI says it is the gaming industry that will provide the shove for Bluetooth with releases of the Nintendo Revolution and Sony's Playstation 3.

However, if mobile phone makers ever hope to displace the iPod as the gadget of choice for music, Bluetooth may provide a unique opportunity to usurp the ubiquitous white box.

Stuart Carlaw, Principal Analyst, Wireless Connectivity, explained: "The importance of the stereo headset cannot be discounted. This product provides one half of a match made in heaven with music-enabled cellular handsets. We expect this type of product to drag Bluetooth into a myriad of other use cases, such as rear seat entertainment in the vehicle and the long-awaited Bluetooth MP3 player."
