Ofcom unveils NGN forum
09 March 2006
UK communications regulator Ofcom earlier this week revealed plans to introduce a next generation networks (NGN) industry body later this month.
NGN UK, as it is to be known, will be led by Peter Black as executive chairman, in addition to his ongoing role overseeing the independent Office of the Telecommunications Adjudicator and Local Loop Unbundling in the UK.
Since the introduction of an NGN industry body was first proposed by Ofcom in its June 2005 consultation on NGNs eight companies have already committed to the organisation: British Telecom; Cable & Wireless; Easynet; Kingston Communications; NTL; Thus; Vodafone and Wanadoo UK.
NGN UK will focus on the technical and commercial arrangements for NGN development. Its initial priority will be to help companies develop an effective technical and commercial framework for interconnection between NGNs.
The organisation will also consult to ensure that the development and deployment of BT's 21st Century Network offers all providers the same products, prices and processes on equal terms and does not inhibit reasonable developments by alternative network operators.
