10,000 US jobs to go at AT&T
07 March 2006
According to its chief financial officer, AT &T plans to cut up to 10,000 jobs, mostly through normal turnover, if its proposed $67bn purchase of BellSouth is given the go ahead by shareholders and regulators.
Rick Linder told the Associated Press that the cuts will take place over three years and will cull the combined employee count from about 317,000 employees to around 307,000.
The exact number of cuts will be determined once the merger is complete. Most positions will, according to an AT&T spokesperson, be eliminated through attrition.
Once established, the new company will be America's largest phone company, with nearly half of all lines as well as being the largest mobile carrier and the largest broadband service provider.
AT&T expects the merger to complete next year.
