Skype gets into bed with Intel
09 February 2006
In a bid to extend its reach even further, Voice over IP (VoIP) champion, Skype, on Wednesday announced a partnership with Intel to optimise its VoIP technology on the chip-maker's dual core processors.
The initial result of the partnership is the availability of ten-way voice conference calling in Skype 2.0 on the Intel platform. An AMD platform will support five callers.
Under the initiative, Intel and Skype are targeting home and business users with Centrino Duo laptops and desktops based on Pentium D, Pentium Extreme Edition and the recently introduced Intel Viiv.
Later this year, Skype will optimise video calling for Intel dual-core technology and intends to extend functionality to handheld computers and PDAs, as well as WiFi and WiMAX networks.
Skype, which was acquired last year by eBay Inc., first introduced a mobile version of its technology for Pocket PC in 2004.
