In the late 1880′s, Almond Strowger, an undertaker from Kansas City was unhappy when he found out that
the telephone operator was routing business to his competitor, who was the operator’s husband! He
subsequently invented the first version of a switching system that was to remove go-betweens and power
direct connection between users.

According to Informa Telecoms & Media, the market for content and services on cell phones is expected to grow to $150 billion by 2011. All the bets are placed, yet end users are ultimately the ones who hold the cards. In 2007, the iPhone jolted the industry just as Macintosh, and later Windows, shook the PC world over twenty years ago, and for a similar reason: by again emphasizing that user experience is a decisive factor to generate enthusiasm and build Web 2.0 fan clubs. It is clearer than ever that success will be predicated both on the nature of the services offered and upon the ease with which users are able to discover and access services, as well as interact with these services and with fellow users.

Both fixed and mobile telecom operators are facing new competitive challenges as they shift their focus from the network to developing retail business and content partnerships. Among the strategies they can adopt are: invest in fiber to the home in order to offer quadruple play services; converge their current and future customer offerings; and
separate their network and service operations. In addition, the fierce competitive environment will drive increased merger and acquisition activity as well as the formation of partnerships between organizations that previously viewed themselves as separate entities – for example, fixed and wireless companies.

The evolution to a converged world has put Service Providers under increasing market and competitive pressure. Responding to these market pressures requires solutions that enable a decreased time to market for newer, differentiated multi-media services while increasing customer service and focus. At the same time costs must be lowered and shareholder demands for increased value must be met. This combination can be very difficult to resolve.

Mobile broadband is becoming a reality, as the Internet generation grows accustomed to having broadband access wherever they go, and not just at home or in the office. Out of the estimated 1.8 billion people who will have broadband by 2012, some two-thirds will be mobile broadband consumers – and the majority of these will be served by HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) and LTE (Long Term Evolution) networks.
