O2 tops UK mobile broadband performance study
UK mobile broadband users accessing the web over dongles and datacards are getting average throughput of 1.5Mbit/s, according to research released Thursday by UK regulator Ofcom. But there were significant differences between the five carriers’ performance, with O2 delivering the best performance, and Orange the worst. 3UK outperformed T-Mobile, with which it shares a 3G network.
Rohde & Schwarz and Synopsys form LTE testing alliance
Rohde & Schwarz, a supplier of test and measurement solutions, and Synopsys, which owns telecoms IP and libraries, have announced a collaboration that should accelerate the design and verification of LTE-related equipment.
Winners toast success at Informa LTE Awards 2011
The 2011 Informa LTE Awards winners were announced on Tuesday night at a gala event that was part of the LTE World Summit in Amsterdam, where the winners were finally announced to the industry. The ceremony, held at the spectacular De Duif in Amsterdam and compered by BBC television sports journalist Rob Bonnet, saw eight companies recognised for their achievements across ten categories. There were 49 nominations.

Ofcom report: LTE networks to up capacity by 200 per cent
Ofcom, the UK’s telecoms regulatory body, has released a report stating that it expects future UK LTE networks to be 3.3 times more spectrally efficient as current 3G technologies, giving capacity gains of 230 per cent using the same amount of spectrum.

Sri Lanka hits the LTE road with trials, rollouts
Sri Lankan telco Dialog Axiata has launched 4G/LTE network trials at a variety of locations across Colombo. The trials are taking place in parallel with the carrier’s countrywide expansion of HSPA+ services and, according to the carrier, is “the first exposition of an LTE network in the South Asian region.” The pilot networks are running on Huawei kit.

European banks issue guidelines for NFC payments
The European Payments Council (EPC) has released draft guidelines governing the use of Near Field Communications (NFC) technology for mobile payments. The Council, which represents the European banking industry, has also called for stakeholder submissions on the subject, with the deadline for feedback on June 17th this year.
Intel shakes chip world with ‘skyscraper’ transistors
Chip giant Intel on Wednesday claimed a “major technical breakthrough”, introducing high volume production of the world’s first 3D transistor design. The technology could deliver significant performance gains to mobile devices while avoiding an increase in power consumption. Expect to see the developments implemented in Intel’s Atom chipsets.
