Comviva’s Mobile Data Platform Spurs Mobile Data Traffic Growth in Emerging Markets

Introduces its unique data packages for operators to bolster data traffic towards increased ARPU

- Enables 70% improvement in download speed
- 50% reduction in Total Cost to Operator through MDP

Dubai, November 27, 2011: Comviva, the global leader in providing mobile solutions beyond VAS, today introduced data packages for its Mobile Data Platform (MDP), to provide complete control of the data pipe to the operators across emerging markets including Middle East, Africa, Latin America, Europe and Asia.

Comviva’s new mobile data packages introduced are designed to suit different market segments depending on the traffic volume & future growth in the subscriber base. The new packages are MDP 500 for scalability upto 500Mbps, MDP 1000 for upto 4Gbps and MDP 5000 for capacity of upto 30Gbps. These packages are designed to take care of current needs plus scalability requirements, so that capacity upgrades are non-disruptive.

Vikram Shanbhag, Vice President, Mobile Messaging Solutions, Comviva said “In the struggle to maintain a high performance network, improve scalability, encourage long term customer loyalty and provide differentiated services, operators face a challenge in managing the explosive data pipe. The exponential rise in traffic volumes has led to higher network congestion. Aligned to the expected data demand, Comviva’s future proof Mobile Data Platform supports increasing data usage while significantly reducing operators’ investment on Capex and Opex.”

“Also with the increased adoption of smart phones, subscribers expect a PC like experience on their mobile device. As the demand for mobile data is growing by leaps and bounds, operators around the world are presented with a unique opportunity to generate new revenue streams and grow their business,” further added Shanbhag.

With over 10 years of experience in managing mobile data pipes for more than 80 operators globally across 40 plus countries, Comviva is ideally placed to be the leader in evolving an operator’s mobile data strategy. Comviva’s award-winning Mobile Data Platform (MDP) enables mobile operators and wireless service providers to effectively manage, optimize and monetize the broadband data traffic to deliver a better service experience – while reducing investment in Capex and Opex. MDP is a comprehensive suite, offering acceleration, smart caching, video caching, P2P caching, policy & bandwidth management, DPI based profiling and inline billing.

According to a 2011 Cisco Report, Mobile data traffic will grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 92 percent from 2010 to 2015. Furthermore it is estimated that 2/3rd of world’s mobile data traffic will be video by 2015.

Informa Telecoms & Media’s “Mobilizing public services in Africa” White Paper, which is available at the AfricaCom event in Cape Town, ranks South Africa just ahead of Kenya and Egypt as the African country most ready to embrace mobile government services.

Informa Telecoms & Media’s “Mobilizing public services in Africa” White Paper, which is available at the AfricaCom event in Cape Town, ranks South Africa just ahead of Kenya and Egypt as the African country most ready to embrace mobile government services.

Despite South Africa’s appearance at the top of the index, joint authors Nick Jotischky and Sheridan Nye note that until now mobile government implementations have been far slower to take off there than in Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda and Tanzania. These East African countries have been quicker to realise the benefits to citizens and small businesses (agricultural advice, payment of utility bills, commodity pricing information) of delivering public services using cellular technologies.

E-government is being seen increasingly by African governments as a source of economic, social and political development that encourages greater citizen engagement and improves access to services. And yet two-thirds of respondents to a C-level industry survey, whcih Informa recently commissioned, believe e-government services are still under-developed in Africa.

Jotischky notes “It is striking when looking at e-government strategies in Africa that there is no clear articulation of the role mobile devices can play in the spread of e-government services. Given the importance of mobile in Africa’s economy and culture over the last decade, this appears strange. After all, not only does the continuing growth in wireless access ensure a wide audience reach, but messaging and data usage trends suggest many consumers in Africa are already using mobile for a variety of purposes. Furthermore, the mobile device market continues to mature and smartphone penetration is accelerating.” Informa projects that by 2016 over a third of mobile connections in South Africa will be via smartphones.

The report notes that many of the mobile government services already implemented are in East and North Africa. Most of these services are directed at citizens and businesses but as yet, governments have not used mobile technology as a way of overhauling internal processes and providing more flexibility to their workforces.

Nye suggests: “Technology providers in Africa have an opportunity to enable mobile government by encouraging the migration of public sector services to the cloud. Virtualisation of infrastructure and flexible, usage-based pricing would allow government agencies to pay for what they need and flex costs accordingly to match demand. Mobility services should form an integrated part of the public sector’s cloud migration.”

Informa’s mobile government readiness index is based on the following indicators: mobile penetration; 3G penetration; mobile broadband penetration forecasts; proportion of population living in rural areas; the size of public sector as a % of GDP; UN’s e-Government Readiness Index; fixed broadband penetration and literacy rates. The index excluded countries with a population less than 5 million.

Informa’s Analysts will be discussing this and other hot topics at the AfricCom event in Cape Town. For more information please visit: http://africa.comworldseries.com/

This will be accomplished by closing the gap between traditional network monitoring and service-oriented, process-driven network management. The solution is equipped with an efficient event correlation engine which simplifies monitoring complex services, automates finding potential problem root causes and enriches events with advanced information. The embedded BPM (Business Process Management) Engine is specifically designed to manage a telecom operator’s processes. The convergent solution will be used to manage both mobile and fixed MTS networks all over Russia.

- Partnership with Comarch allows MTS to optimize costs and ensure that high-quality reliable services are provided to our customers. We decided to install the NGSA solution that allows complex services implementation while ensuring efficient network and service monitoring. I am confident that Comarch solutions will enable MTS to accomplish transition from a network-centric towards a customer-centric OSS ecosystem with an ultimate goal of creating the best customer experience. – commented MTS Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, Andrey Ushatsky.

- I am very pleased that Comarch has been selected to deliver key systems for network and service assurance as well as service inventory to MTS. Comarch OSS solutions will contribute to improving the quality of MTS services and increasing customer satisfaction. – said Jacek Lonc, Member of the Board, Comarch AG.

Comarch Next Generation Service Assurance is a solution that augments traditional resource-centric fault management and transforms it towards a customer-centric service assurance solution. Apart from robust network alarm processing with advanced root cause analysis capabilities, the system calculates the impact on customer- and resource-facing services by giving insight into customer perception of network faults. This enhances traditional network monitoring with information about real impact on customer service. It enables a reaction to service incidents before a customer issues a complaint, which forms an essential part of a pro-active approach to service monitoring.

Main functionalities and benefits of the convergent Comarch solution chosen by MTS include:

Comprehensive service modelling and monitoring engine, providing the mapping between resources and services, even for complex cases

Progressive fault management system, including advanced event enrichment (with use of information from external systems) and strong correlation engine to assure clear data presentation and root cause analysis

Automatic business impact analysis giving priorities to tasks related to business information (e.g. SLA)

Process management system controlling and organizing the complex workflow in the areas of incident and problem management

Comarch, a global software provider, commissioned a white paper on the role of OSS systems in ensuring a seamless customer experience for mobile subscribers. The white paper was delivered by Stratecast, a division of Frost & Sullivan, based on research done on telecom operators worldwide.

The document is not just another repetitive take on the customer experience issue. It presents the topic from a different viewpoint – instead of focusing on customer-facing functions, it shows you how the key to customer satisfaction can be found deep inside the network. The aim was to show that technical aspects of telecom businesses are closer to business than they are traditionally perceived.

The white paper lists four OSS functions that, when focused on the customer, deliver differentiation while helping CSPs control costs. It explains what changes have to be performed in OSS ecosystems to support current telecom business priorities and depicts how to feed the OSS with the customer’s perception of the services. The main areas for improvement that the white paper points out lie in changing the approach to assurance, fulfillment, network upgrades and capacity management processes.

Nancee Ruzicka, Senior Research Analyst at Stratecast, who is the author of the report sees “systems that activate, monitor and manage the quality of products used by customers on a daily basis as the key to building and maintaining a solid customer relationship”.

The last chapter of the document describes how Comarch helps operators increase customer experience based on Comarch’s implementation for MTS Russia.

The paper is part of Comarch’s recently launched campaign that concentrates on refocusing OSS on the customer.

A new user on the rise: the cloud user

With the Networked Society on the horizon, a new user is emerging – the cloud user. This user is already transforming networks, demanding a converged service experience that crosses both devices and access methods.

The cloud user is one who has many devices to access content and who cares a lot about quality – but not about what it takes to achieve it. This user wants a convergent experience and doesn’t want many subscriptions. Using a fixed line for the majority of traffic, this user still wants to have a range of mobile devices for accessing their favorite sites on the go.

For the cloud user, the borders between fixed and mobile are already gone, putting the operator in a tough position.

The main enabler for a converged service experience lies in the smart control layer, and the logics of the smart control layer will be driven by mobile logics.

“We must design and transform the networks of the future with this user in mind – we would like operators to offer all consumers the same service experience as Apple users already experience with Apple products” says Mats Johansson, Marketing Responsible for Fixed Broadband & Convergence at Ericsson. “Cloud user behavior benefits greatly from a fixed and mobile network convergence where mobile control logic will prevail.
“Mobile devices will dominate in access cloud services, mobile challenges in the control plane will influence the whole converged network, and Quality of Services and policy control will have to be of the mobile grade.”

With these capabilities, Johansson says, operators will be able to monetize the new cloud based OTT-services, and become increasingly relevant to the cloud users.

So how can operators gain an edge in this new market?

To manage the cloud user, networks need to evolve to the next-generation of IP networks, Johansson says. This transformation rests on four pillars – scalability, smart networks, simplicity and superior performance.
“Scalability in bandwidth and signaling is needed to cater to services such as HDTV and to handle the increasing number of connected devices, while smart networks are needed to provide Quality of Service models that assign different types of quality to different types of services depending on the user’s subscription package. Simplicity in the architectures of backhaul and transport will reduce the traffic costs and superior performance is necessary with more and more services in the cloud, especially when it comes to enterprise services.”

Video is another factor when it comes to building future networks. Johansson says: “Video will be a very demanding cloud service to operate. Video will account for 80 to 90 present of the traffic in future networks and operators will be in driver’s seat when it comes to monetizing these services across the ecosystem, but with the right support, meeting the high quality requirements this demands, cloud users can have access to the services they want, when they want them. We, as Ericsson, will help the operators to be more relevant serving the cloud user.”

As the clock ticks down to the Broadband InfoVision Awards ceremony, to be held in Paris in two months’ time, the time has come to deliver previews of the different awards categories and their shortlisted entries. We start at the beginning with Category One – Best New Service.

Etisalat, based in the United Arab Emirates, has been shortlisted for Best New Service for its over-the-top (OTT) TV service ‘OnWeb/OnWeb+’. The service has been in development for two years, and is being made available not only in Etisalat’s domestic market but also in other countries in the Middle East region, both on a retail and wholesale basis.

The service is based on an online video delivery platform licensed from US firm Endavo Media and utilises content protection from Verimatrix, whilst a partnership formed with Internap, a US provider of Content Delivery Network (CDN) services, will see the latter establish a presence not only in the UAE but also in other countries in the region, in line with Etisalat’s objectives of becoming a regional content and TV service provider.

Etisalat has also carefully selected a number of connected devices which will work with the OnWeb/OnWeb+ service, including LG Smart 3D TVs, LG Smart Boxes, Android devices, iOS devices, Roku, Boxee, AirTies JS, PCs and Softathome devices. The telco currently has over 40 different content partners signed up for the service, and has received expressions of interest for the wholesale service from a number of telcos in the Middle East, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Pakistan, Jordan, Sudan, Bahrain and Indonesia.

In November of last year, Malaysia’s YTL Communications launched its advanced, nationwide and convergent 4G network, which has subsequently garnered it a place on the Broadband InfoVision Awards shortlist for Best New Service. Backed by the financial strength of the YTL Group, the company achieved a nationwide footprint at launch covering more than 65 per cent of the Malaysian population, using an internet-compatible open platform to enable rapid and continuous innovation, and a cutting edge architecture that brings together mobile broadband, mobile telephony (voice and SMS) and cloud-based services.

The network is estimated to be 3-5 times faster than previous generation 3G networks, and enables users to access the network through a ‘Yes ID’ rather than a sim card. Multiple devices are able to log on to the network using the same Yes ID, which has a Malaysian mobile number associated with it, thus enabling calls and text messages to be routed concurrently to all devices signed in using the same ID.

YTL Communications also plans to launch a hybrid IP and DTT television service in 2012, using the 4G mobile network as a foundation, and delivering a converged (internet and broadcast) TV service that will look to deliver not just entertainment but also educational content, and is expected to create new economic growth opportunities.

Finally in this category, Huawei has been shortlisted for its IMS-based convergent conferencing service, which seeks to address a booming hosted conferencing market recently predicted in a Wainhouse study to reach $ 6.35bn by 2014.

Huawei’s solution is designed as a carrier-grade convergent service which supports voice, data collaboration, SD and HD video and telepresence meeting services. It is interoperable between different terminals, networks and platforms, and uses Huawei-patented technology such as Video Motion Enhancement (VME) to reduce bandwidth demands, cutting bandwidth requirements by as much as 50 per cent.

The Broadband InfoVision Awards will be held in Paris on September 27th during a Gala Dinner Presentation aboard a river cruise on the Seine, travelling through the heart of the French capital. For more information and to register, please click here

During the last decade, loyalty and reward management systems have evolved from simple tools designed to collect loyalty points and exchange them for low quality goods, to sophisticated systems and platforms supporting the most critical business processes of customer database management and active churn prevention. The new version of Comarch Loyalty Management enables for the development of effective, unique loyalty programs for residential, SOHO, SMEs and enterprise segments.

It also provides the possibility of extending customer interaction to multiple touch points. Comarch Loyalty Management directly supports various channels of communication such as email, SMS, POS, call center and customer portal.
Piotr Machnik, EVP Product Management & Marketing at Comarch’s Telecommunications Business Unit, says: – We are observing an increase in the saturation of the telecom market which drives CSPs to look for new methods of lowering customer retention costs and attracting customers attention to next generation telecommunication and content-based services. This is why we prepared a special offer for telecoms, based on our Comarch Loyalty Management suite, which has been on the retail market for over 10 years now. Based on our experience in the BSS/CRM domain and cooperation with marketing departments of leading mobile and multi-service operators, we adjusted Comarch Loyalty Management to the requirements of the telecom market. We believe customer retention is one of the strongest strategic priorities for operators right now and therefore we meet their business needs with a dedicated loyalty software.

Comarch Loyalty Management supports the entire process of creating and maintaining loyalty programs, from communication with participants, logistics, creation of business rules and analysis of data, to cooperation with telecom or content providers, as well as global loyalty program operators. It can be applied to programs of various scales, both multi-partner and stand-alone, according to the needs of the telecom operator. The application enables defining and administering loyalty programs and provides intuitive servicing of client accounts, contacts, rewards and promotions. One of the advantages of Comarch Loyalty Management is the possibility of delivery and deployment as a stand-alone, fully functional component, as well as a pre-integrated part of the Comarch BSS portfolio.
