Sanjay Jha, who revived Motorola’s devices business and led the company through its acquisition, has been replaced as CEO, after Google finalised its takeover of the firm.
Internet giant Google has cleared the final hurdle in the way of its acquisition of handset manufacturer Motorola Mobility. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce Anti Monopoly Bureau (MOFCOM) approved the deal over the weekend with several conditions.
Motorola Mobility has posted a loss of $86m in its first-quarter earnings for 2012. The loss is $5m deeper than the $81m loss the company made in the same quarter last year. The firm, which is on the verge of being acquired by Google, is still to post an annual profit, having recorded losses for the four years since it was established.
The European Commission (EC) has given the go-ahead to Google’s proposed acquisition of Motorola Mobility. It said that the deal “would not significantly modify the market situation in respect of operating systems and patents for these devices.”
Telecoms firms reported mixed fortunes in their fourth quarter earnings results, with Samsung having reason to celebrate, Motorola Mobility reporting an average quarter and AT&T taking a huge hit.
The latest patent battle between smartphone players has seen Apple lose an interim ruling in the US, after the firm attempted to sue Motorola Mobility for infringing three of its patents. It has also publicly identified nearly all of its suppliers and invited an outside workplace conditions group to inspect them.
Google’s takeover of Motorola Mobility has hit a stumbling block as the European Commission (EC) has suspended its review of the merger. An EC spokesperson confirmed to Telecoms.com that it “needs certain documents from Google that are essential to its evaluation of the transaction”.
Infrastructure vendor Nokia Siemens Networks said Tuesday that it is selling off the WiMAX equipment portfolio acquired from Motorola Solutions as part of a wider deal earlier this year. The division will be sold to messaging and infrastructure player NewNet Communication Technologies for an undisclosed sum, along with around 300 employees, as well as active customer and supplier contracts.
