Austrian carrier mobilkom laid claim to being the first operator in Europe to launch the HSPA+ flavour of 3G technology on a commercial basis on Monday.

Mobilkom, which is owned by Telekom Austria, said the network upgrade would allow a greater number of customers to get higher mobile broadband speeds, especially in congested areas.

In the first stage of rollout, HSPA+ will be rolled out in Vienna’s 10th district, with further hotspots following throughout the country by the second quarter. The carrier claims transmission speeds of up to 28.8Mbps will be reached over the course of the year, naming Ericsson as the main supplier for the network upgrade.

From this week, the operator will make the Huawei HSPA+ capable modem, the E270+ available at the A1 online shop for Eur49.

Over the course of the year, the company is planning to cover 90 per cent of the Austrian population with UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA and to introduce the HSUPA 5.7 technology, in addition to HSPA+, in highly congested areas.
