Following Broadcom’s recent patent victory over Qualcomm, Finnish vendor Nokia has escalated its complaint against the CDMA pioneer to the US International Trade Commission (ITC), hoping for a similar result.

Nokia alleges that Qualcomm has engaged in unfair trade practices and has infringed five Nokia patents in its CDMA and WCDMA/GSM chipsets.

Nokia is requesting that the ITC initiate an investigation and moves to ban importation of infringing Qualcomm chipsets and handsets to the US.

The patents in question relate to technologies that improve the performance and efficiency of wireless communication devices as well as enabling lower manufacturing costs, smaller product size and increased battery life, Nokia said.

Earlier this month, the Bush administration let stand the ITC order barring the importation of Qualcomm chips and phones containing those chips that infringe a Broadcom patent.

The ITC had ruled on the ban in June, after finding that Qualcomm’s cellular baseband chips infringe five claims of one of Broadcom’s US patents. But the order had been subject to a 60-day presidential review period.
