A networked society
Ericsson’s CTO Ulf Ewaldsson opened Broadband World Forum in Amsterdam with some impressive numbers: 85 per cent of the world is covered with 2G voice; 45 per cent of the population is covered with 3G; and five per cent is covered by a 4G system, which he expects to reach 50 per cent in the next five years. There are a billion phones with internet connectivity and 11 million cars online.
Watch his presentation above and hear his views on how the explosive growth in cloud technology was spurring the requirement for Software Defined Network (SDN) specifications for service providers and telcos.
“The architecture of the network must evolve to cater to growth,” Ewaldsson said, referring to forecasts that data traffic will increase 15 fold over the next five years, having already grown 104 per cent year on year between 2011 and 2012.
