Nelson Takayanagi, Superintendent of the Private Sector at Brazilian telecoms regulator Anatel, has indicated that the body sees mobile broadband as having far greater growth prospects in Brazil than fixed, estimating that the number of mobile broadband accesses will reach 1bn by 2022.

Speaking at the Broadband World Forum currently in Paris on September 29th, Takayanagi said: “We have to think of a new public policy to increase access to broadband in low-income areas.”

Brazil had reached 16m fixed broadband connections by the end of last year, and Anatel is now projecting that there will be around 70m fixed broadband connections by 2022 and 40mn cable TV connections. “We need at least another €100bn of investment to get there, equating to around €10bn per year,” he said.
