In tackling these challenges, the industry faces the prospect of migration from circuit-switched technology to packetized approaches in both the access and core network. Should voice fail to successfully translate into this new IP-oriented world, it risks becoming nothing more than a commodity – a position which would have dire consequences for the mobile operators, which historically have generated the vast majority of their revenues from voice services and have as yet failed to substitute them with data services.

The most likely future for voice is to navigate a course that brings more value through the integration of data capabilities, re-imaging voice in the context of rich voice.
