Croatian operator VIPnet has announced the completion of a successful LTE trial in the 800MHz “digital dividend” band freed up by the migration to digital television. The trial, which began in October last year, took place in Zagreb, and achieved data speeds of up to 150Mbps download and 50Mbps upload.

According to CEO Mladen Pejkovic, VIPnet will dedicate a minimum of 10 per cent of its total investment budget into LTE development. In 2010, the operator invested $68.5m in improving coverage, services and product offerings; Pejkovic says that VIPnet will launch commercial LTE services in 2012. It will conduct public demonstrations of its LTE network this weekend.

VIPnet , a subsidiary of Telekom Austria’s Mobilkom unit, currently offers HSPA+ services in Zagreb, Split, Osijek and Rijeka. It was the first private mobile network operator in the country, with a subscriber base of over 2.7 million.
